ABOUT / Prof. Dr. Joachim Weickert


- Prof. Dr. Joachim Weickert (male) is a full Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland University where he heads the Mathematical Image Analysis Group. He performs research in image processing, computer vision and scientific computing, focusing on techniques based on partial differential equations and variational methods. He has developed models and efficient algorithms for image restoration, enhancement, segmentation, compression, motion computation, stereo reconstruction, shape from shading, as well as processing methods for tensor fields. The scientific work of Joachim Weickert covers more than 260 refereed publications and 9 books. They have led to over 15000 citations in Google Scholar and an h-index of 65. Joachim Weickert has received 22 research, teaching and reviewing awards, including the 2010 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award. It constitutes the most prestigious German science award, amounting to 2.5 million Euro of research funds. Dr. Weickert has served in the editorial boards of nine international journals. In 2011 he has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision (Springer). He has been reviewer for more than 60 journals and 19 funding organisations. He has given over 150 invited talks at conferences, workshops and other universities, and was area chair of six ECCV or ICCV conferences. He has refused offers for professorships at the Technical University of München, the University of Karlsruhe, the Free University of Berlin, and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.
